Berwick-upon-Tweed is celebrating 900 years of history … and everyone’s invited!

“Our Maritime and Seaside Stories”, the themes for August, were centred around Spittal Seaside Festival and Berwick Lifeboat Festival.

Berwick Watchtower Gallery in Tweedmouth hosted an exhibition created by local artists and craftspeople and displays illustrating aspects of Berwick’s fishing, sea-faring and maritime heritage, and the development of Spittal from health spa to seaside resort.

Spittal Seaside Festival had all the features of a traditional seaside holiday including fairground rides, stalls, Punch and Judy Show and donkey rides.

2015 is the 170th anniversary of Berwick’s first lifeboat and this year’s RNLI Lifeboat Festival marked the occasion with a special rescue demonstration by Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade using the traditional breeches buoy, sponsored by Tyne and Tweed Insurance and Mortgage Services.
